Homesick Brew: Dong Dong Ju

It’s in my blood…

Raise up your dong dong ju

Raise up your dong dong ju

probably because I drank so much of it in my time!

I ordered something restaurants Danji and Takashi call maekjoli (막걸리), but what did I get?  Something not quite.  I drank it anyway because I don’t get out much and when I do not often do I get to drink 막걸리, even if it is a poor rendition of it.

Then it hit me: I’ll make it myself!  Duh.  My own dong dong ju.  For those of you who might not know, dong dong ju is an alcoholic elixir that comes from fermenting rice with yeast and an enzyme called nooruk.  I have all the ingredients now I just need to get to brewin’!

Oh dong dong ju, oh dong dong ju, how I love to drink you...

“Oh dong dong ju, oh dong dong ju, how I love to drink you!”

It’s what hikers in Korea drink after a vigorous hike.  I never felt a hike was complete without it.

All in the family

All in the family

For it lifts your spirits…

Just one more...

Just one more…

and brings a song to your heart…

Buddy, can you spare a bowl of dong dong ju!

Buddy, can you spare a bowl of dong dong ju!

and brings out the best in all of us!

Dong dong ju makes friends

Dong dong ju makes friends
